Influence of Cultural Competency, Intercultural Communication, and Organizational Support on Nurses¡¯ Clinical Competency Caring for Foreign Patients

Abstract
As the number of foreign patients using medical institution increases in Korea, the necessity of nurses¡¯clinical competency caring for foreign patients has been raised. This study aims to investigate nurses¡¯ cultural competency, intercultural communication, and organizational support, and further to identify factors influencing their clinical competency. The participants were 473 nurses from 36 tertiary level hospitals. Data were collected using questionnaires and analyzed using t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient and hierarchical multiple regression. Cultural competency, intercultural communication, and organizational support had positive correlations with nurses¡¯ clinical competency. Models including these variables explained 46.6% (F=21.54, p<.001) of the variance for clinical competency. The most influencing factor to clinical competency for caring foreign patients was intercultural communication (¥â=.414, p<.001). The findings demonstrate that is important for nurses to develop intercultural communication and cultural competency. It is also important to provide educational and human resources support to enhance nurses¡¯ competency caring for foreign patients at the organizational level.
